Happy Anniversary to Millbrook Dog Park!
Here's a very quick look back at our history...
In April of 2002, the Raleigh City Council voted unanimously to change the Millbrook Exchange Park master plan to permit the construction of a dog park on land that had been cleared by the winds and rain of Hurricane Fran. Although this project had been included in the 2002-2003 City budget, a revenue shortfall delayed the project. Fortunately, funds were made available and construction on the park began in June, 2002.
Through that very hot summer, volunteers cleared an estimated 5,000 small pine trees and some very nasty bramble bushes to prepare the area we now know as the dog park. The City provided the fencing and other large-ticket items and, by early Spring of 2003, we were ready to open.
After a change in the municipal code to allow dogs to run off-leash within the new dog park, the Raleigh Parks & Recreation Department authorized the opening of the park to the public on Friday, April 11, 2003.
Our continued thanks go to the Raleigh City Council; Raleigh Parks & Recreation; the Raleigh Parks, Recreation, and Greenway Advisory Board; People for Unleashed Parks; our donors; and the more than 100 volunteers who supplied the physical labor to help create the dog park.
