May 16th Work Day

E-mail Print PDF

Volunteers At WorkAn estimated 50 people participated in Friends of Millbrook Dog Park's work day on Saturday, May 16th. While the morning began quite warm, the sudden and intense rain shower provided a little cooling and a healthy dose of increased humidity.

Everyone worked very hard spreading mulch and picking up trash. We also removed dead, low-hanging branches from many of the pine trees, trimmed some of the bushes which were a bit out of control, and removed some other low-hanging tree branches where people couldn't easily clean up after their dogs.

One of the recurring problems we've had is there's not been an ample supply of poop bags in the park. As the first step towards fixing this problem, we've installed a new poop bag dispenser. This style of dispenser is likely to be the type we'll be installing within both dog park areas assuming we can raise the money to buy the number of dispensers we'd like to install. We would like to replace the current dispensers at the entrances to the dog park as well as install new dispensers inside the large and small dog park areas.

Volunteers dug out the gate area to the picnic shelter to make entry and exit much easier. They also created a long mound of mulch designed to redirect water runoff away from the  picnic shelter gate, hoping to delay that area from filling up with mulch as long as possible.

The pine trees in the wooded area of the dog park have now grown enough that there's at least seven or eight feet of vertical clearance throughout that section. People can easily walk around up there, so when the heat of the summer gets here, that area should provide some needed shade to those who come to the park in the middle of the day.

Thanks to each of you who attended our work day and volunteered your time to keep our dog park a clean and safe place for both dogs and humans!!!

If you would like to volunteer to help during our general work days, watch the website for work day announcements or you can sign up for our mailing lists where we send out email announcements to let everyone know about upcoming work days or other events.

The most difficult part of maintaining our website is continually finding new material to present to our dog park population. We need dog pictures for the Mug Shots section, news, and information on upcoming events in our area. We welcome all submissions; however, we cannot guarantee that we'll post everything we receive. If you are sending in your dog's picture, be sure to include the dog's name, date of birth or date of adoption, and age when the picture was taken. Send your submissions to:
